Designing a small bathroom
Opinions vary on just how large a small bathroom can be. Depending on the region and construction standards, 42 square feet can generally be considered a small bathroom. A modern mini bathroom with all essential components can be designed here without any problems. This includes a toilet, washbasin, and shower or bathtub.
Beautiful design is also possible in a small space
If it works on a large scale, it will work on a small scale too. High-quality materials and colors for tiles and walls also carry out their function when designing a small bathroom.
When choosing the color for a small room, bright colors give a sense of freshness while dark colors are more cozy.
A minimalist style is recommended for anyone wanting to get the most from their small bathroom – this results in added tidiness, makes cleaning easier, and also ensures peace of mind.

Challenges when designing a small bathroom
When designing a small bathroom, the optimal use of the limited space available is of primary importance. If the bathroom door opens inwards, for example, additional usable space is lost.
The arrangement of the toilet, washbasin, and shower is thus critical. These should be arranged so they can easily be negotiated. A sliding door is an alternative for creating more space. If the small bathroom has a rectangular floor plan, a bathtub should be positioned at the end of the room.

Common questions when designing a small bathroom
How much time should I plan for the renovation?
The time required not only depends on the scale of the renovation, but also the preparation time, the effective rebuilding time and the delivery time for the bathroom furniture and tiles. This can be up to eight weeks in the latter case.
The availability of the craftsmen carrying out the work should also be taken into account.
The effective rebuilding time is one to three days for a minor renovation, three to five days with new tiles, and one to two weeks for a full renovation.
How can I create storage space in a small bathroom?
If there is no space for additional bathroom furniture, then the washbasin cabinet is particularly important. Additional storage space can be created in the cabinet by concealing the washbasin trap behind the wall. The mirror cabinet can also be installed in the wall. If the room has niches, these should also be used as storage space.
How large should a guest bathroom be?
In extreme cases, just 22 square feet is sufficient for designing a small guest bathroom. This is enough space to install a toilet and washbasin. If a solution with a shower is also needed, the required space is around 32 square feet.
Can a bathtub be installed in a small bathroom, or will I have to go without?
Above all, bathtubs have advantages when it comes to comfort compared to showers. The floor plan of the bathroom is critical for installation. A bathtub measures 70 x 32 inches as standard. However, space-saving bathtubs measuring 51 x 32 inches are also available. The room must be at least this long in order for a bathtub to be installed.
How can I design a small bathroom with roof pitch?
A small bathroom loses even more space when a roof pitch is also present. However, whether a bathtub with standard dimensions fits is not only an issue of space – the load-bearing capacity of the floor also has to be considered.
Additionally, the roof should have a pitch of 35° and the available room height should be 7 feet to ensure sufficient freedom of movement. For washbasins under roof pitches, a minimum distance of 16 inches between head and ceiling is recommended. A minimum overhead distance of 8 inches applies for showers, assuming a floor-even model is used.
Which accessories give a special touch to the room?
Due to the limited space on offer in a small bathroom, accessories should be functional wherever possible. This includes soap dispensers, guest towels, and clothes hooks. In contrast, flowers, vases, or pictures serve to express the individual personality of the host.
